If you’re considering hip augmentation, the main decision is between hip implants and fat grafting. The choice depends on your body type, goals, and the amount of donor fat available. Fat grafting uses your own tissue for a softer contour, while hip implants provide a predictable volume increase – especially for those lacking sufficient donor fat.
At Illuum Cosmetic Surgery in Novi, board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Lakin and Dr. Ozolins evaluate each patient individually to determine which approach will deliver the most balanced, natural-looking result.
Hip augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to add volume and improve the shape of the hip area. Many patients seek it to correct “hip dips” – the inward curves between the hip bone and upper thigh – and create a more defined hourglass figure. These indentations can be caused by bone structure, muscle placement, or the natural distribution of body fat, and regardless of fitness level, hip dips often cannot be changed through diet and exercise alone.
Illuum Cosmetic Surgery offers a dedicated hip dip correction procedure.
There are two primary surgical methods for hip augmentation:
Hip implants – solid silicone devices placed within or on top of the hip muscles to add projection and width.
Fat grafting (fat transfer) – harvesting fat from other areas of the body via liposuction, processing it, and injecting it into the hips to build volume. This is the same principle used in a Brazilian butt lift.
Each method has distinct advantages depending on the patient’s anatomy, body composition, and cosmetic goals. Some patients may even be candidates for a combination approach. A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the most reliable way to determine which path is right for you.
Hip implants are solid silicone prosthetics custom-shaped to fit the contours of the hip area. Unlike breast implants filled with saline or silicone gel, hip implants are made of a firm, cohesive silicone block. They are placed under the skin and muscle layers to add permanent volume and create a more pronounced curve. They are designed to withstand the constant pressure and movement the hip area experiences during walking, sitting, and bending.
Hip implants are crafted from medical-grade solid silicone – the same material used in other body implants, such as pec implants and chin implants. This solid silicone does not rupture or leak the way gel-filled implants can. The material mimics the consistency of firm muscle tissue and has been used reliably in various cosmetic procedures for many years. Implant shape and size are selected based on the patient’s frame, existing hip anatomy, and desired projection.
Hip implants deliver a noticeable, consistent increase in hip width and projection. Because the implant is a fixed device, the volume does not change over time – what you see after healing is what you keep. For very lean patients or those with insufficient body fat for a meaningful fat transfer, implants may be the only viable option to achieve significant volume enhancement.
Recovery from hip implant surgery requires avoiding sitting and lying on the hips for a specific period to allow the implant pockets to heal properly.
A compression garment must be worn to reduce swelling and support the new contours
Most patients can return to light daily activities within a couple of weeks
Strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least six weeks, or until cleared by your surgeon
Swelling can take months to fully resolve
Fat transfer to the hips takes fat from one or more areas of your body and re-injects it into the hip region to fill in depressions and add curves. This approach is closely related to the Brazilian butt lift, which uses the same fat transfer principle to augment the buttocks. At Illuum Cosmetic Surgery, this procedure is a cornerstone of the body contouring practice, leveraging the artistic skill of Dr. Lakin and Dr. Ozolins. This technique provides a dual benefit: slimming a donor area while enhancing the hips.
Fat grafting produces a soft, natural feel and appearance because the augmented area is made of your own living tissue. Results blend seamlessly with surrounding anatomy. The final outcome also includes a slimmer, more contoured appearance in the donor area where liposuction was performed.
Not all transferred fat survives – typically, a percentage of injected fat cells will be reabsorbed during the first few months. Dr. Lakin and Dr. Ozolins account for this by slightly overfilling the area. Final results usually become clear around three to six months, once swelling has resolved, and surviving fat cells have established a blood supply.
Recovery from hip fat grafting is similar to BBL recovery and involves managing two areas: the liposuction sites and the injection sites.
Compression garments are required
Avoid direct pressure on the newly grafted hips for several weeks to maximize fat cell survival
Lymphatic massage is recommended to reduce swelling and support fluid drainage – Illuum Cosmetic Surgery offers this service in-office, and patients are also encouraged to perform gentle self-massage at home for a few minutes daily
Most patients can resume non-strenuous work and daily activities within one to two weeks
Approximately 60% of post-surgical swelling resolves by the six-week mark, though complete resolution can take up to a year
Significant, reliable volume increase and projection
No donor fat needed – ideal for very lean patients
Permanent, one-time result
Foreign material in the body
Can feel less natural than real tissue
Does not offer body contouring in other areas
Limited ability to achieve subtle, gradual curves
Potential for implant shifting over time
Uses your own tissue – no foreign material
Natural look and feel
Dual benefit of liposuction contouring at donor sites
Very small, discreet incisions
No implant-related maintenance
Requires enough donor fat for a meaningful transfer
Some fat cells will not survive, making results partially unpredictable
Significant weight loss after the procedure can reduce volume
May need a second session for optimal volume
You may be a better candidate for hip implants if you:
Have a low body fat percentage with limited donor sites
Want a guaranteed, defined volume increase
Are not interested in or eligible for liposuction
You may be a better candidate for fat grafting if you:
Have adequate fat in areas like the abdomen, flanks, back, or thighs
Want a natural look and feel
Are interested in slimming other body areas at the same time
Prefer to avoid synthetic implants
Are looking to correct hip dips specifically – this is often the preferred method
When evaluating hip implants vs fat grafting, the right answer depends on your anatomy. Dr. Lakin and Dr. Ozolins assess each patient’s body composition, skin quality, and goals during a one-on-one consultation at our Novi office.
Hip augmentation can dramatically improve body proportion and address hip dips that diet and exercise cannot change. Hip implants offer predictable, permanent volume for patients without adequate donor fat, while fat grafting provides a natural feel, avoids foreign materials, and reshapes other body areas in the process. The right method depends entirely on your unique anatomy and goals.
A consultation with board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Lakin and Dr. Ozolins at Illuum Cosmetic Surgery in Novi is the clearest path to understanding which approach will give you the result you’re looking for.
