What Is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation, or mentoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery that enhances chin contour and projection. It is performed by inserting an implant to add volume and improve the appearance of the chin. Other techniques include fat transfer and dermal filler. The main goal is to improve the balance and proportions of facial features, with a more pronounced jawline and a better side profile. Such augmentation may also reduce or eliminate the double chin.

Types of Chin Augmentation

Chin Implants

A chin implant is one of the most common ways to augment this body area. The surgery works by placing an implant on top of the chin bone to increase projection and create a more defined jawline. This type of facial implant comes in different sizes and shapes to suit the patient’s facial contours according to their needs and aesthetic goals. Silicone implants are valued for their flexibility, durability, and comfort, while polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) facial implants are also highly regarded for their excellent integration with body tissues. Both materials are customizable to meet the unique needs and preferences of our patients, ensuring a tailored approach to enhancing facial contours. These implants provide permanent improvement and refined definition to the chin area.

Fat transfer chin augmentation involves taking fat from another part of the patient’s body by liposuction and injecting it into the soft tissues of the chin. Common donor sites include the abdomen, thighs, or hips. The transferred fat provides a subtle increase in chin projection and results in a smoother, more natural feel and appearance. Touch-up injections may be needed to maintain its shape.
Dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, can be used for nonsurgical chin augmentation. They are injected directly into the soft tissues using a fine needle. This augments the chin contour for an average of 6–12 months before the body naturally absorbs the injected substance. Dermal fillers provide an immediate boost in chin size and shape. While not as long-lasting as implants, this treatment requires no incisions and little recovery time.

Preparation

Our chin augmentation procedure begins with an initial consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Lakin. This consultation involves discussing the patient’s goals, reviewing their medical history, taking measurements, and determining the appropriate implant type and size. X-rays, CT scans, and other types of imaging can be used to analyze the facial structure and help with operation planning. In addition, antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection. Patients are instructed not to eat or drink anything for 6–8 hours before the operation.

Chin augmentation with implants requires small incisions inside the mouth or under the chin, which are made after administering local anesthesia. Our plastic surgeon creates a pocket by lifting the soft tissues away from the bone, taking care not to damage nerves or blood vessels. The custom-fitted implant is inserted into the newly created pocket and positioned for optimal augmentation and symmetry. It is secured using tiny screws or sutures. The incisions are closed up, and the outside of the chin is bandaged.

With Fat Transfer

This procedure begins with liposuction to harvest fat from another area of the patient’s body. Common sites include the thighs, abdomen, or hips. The fat is processed to purify the adipose cells. Then, small injections are made across the chin area to accurately position the transferred tissue for subtle contouring and projection. Finally, the donor site is bandaged.

With Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic acid or other filler is injected directly into the soft tissues of the chin using a fine needle. Small injections are made into different skin depths for even augmentation. The filler helps to create projection and definition in the chin region. Ice packs can be used afterward to minimize temporary swelling and tenderness from the injections. The results are immediate but non-permanent compared to chin implants.

Recovery From Chin Augmentation Surgery Banner

Recovery From Chin Augmentation Surgery

After getting implants, patients might notice some swelling, bruising,
and discomfort. Our surgeon will prescribe pain medication to manage these issues. A chin strap may also be recommended to support the new contour
and minimize swelling.
Patients should be able to return to work and usual activities within 7 days. However, it is important to refrain from strenuous movements for 4–6 weeks. While swelling and bruising should begin to subside within the first 7–14 days,
it can take several months to see the final results of your surgery.
Patients should maintain good oral hygiene (especially if the incision is inside
the mouth) and avoid any activities that could negatively affect their healing.
