What Is a Lower Body Lift?

Lower body lift surgery, also known as beltplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen, hips, outer thighs, and buttocks. This extensive procedure leads to significant cosmetic transformations, making the figure slimmer and more beautiful. It rejuvenates the patient’s appearance by tightening loose skin that cannot be corrected through diet and exercise alone. In essence, lower body lift combines several surgeries in one procedure, including:

Extended tummy tuck

Hip lift

Lower back lift

Buttock lift

Pulling the skin up from the outer thighs, creating a similar effect as an outer thigh lift

Lower body lifts are designed for patients after massive weight loss or pregnancy that left hanging skin folds. Our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Lakin and Dr. Ozolins, are experts in this procedure, providing excellent results with minimal recovery time.

Before & After

Preparation for a Lower Body Lift

Preparation for a lower body lift begins with an initial consultation with our plastic surgeon. We evaluate the patient to determine if they are a good candidate for the procedure. The surgeon examines the problem areas and discusses aesthetic goals. We also review the patient’s medical history and any past surgeries or health conditions that could complicate the recovery. If the person is deemed a good candidate, the surgeon discusses the details of the procedure, including surgical techniques, incision placement, and expected results.
Before the operation, patients may need medical clearance from their primary care physicians. They should also stop taking certain medications or supplements that could interfere with anesthesia or healing. It is crucial to prepare a recovery space at home, stock up on easy-to-cook meals, and arrange transportation. By following our instructions carefully, patients can maximize their results and speed up healing.

Markings

The surgeon carefully marks the areas that will be treated while the patient stands. Standard zones include the thighs, buttocks, hips, and abdomen. These markings guide the surgeon during the procedure.
The lower body lift is usually performed under general anesthesia to keep the patient comfortable and prevent pain. Our anesthesiology team administers intravenous medications to cause a state of controlled unconsciousness before the surgery begins. Alternatively, we can offer awake anesthesia with sedation if the patient prefers this option and it is appropriate.
Incisions may be placed in different areas around the circumference of the body, including the groin and lower abdomen. The surgeon makes these cuts along the pre-marked lines to minimize scarring. We can also tighten the abdominal muscles if they are separated after significant weight loss or pregnancy.
During a lower body lift, excess skin and fat deposits are removed. Liposuction may be used to eliminate stubborn fat pockets. The remaining skin and tissue are smoothed and tightened to contour the hips, outer thighs, buttocks, and abdomen.
Once the targeted areas have been lifted and shaped, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures, surgical tape, or skin adhesives. Small tubes may be temporarily placed to drain fluids under the skin.

Add-On Procedures

Silhouetch℠ High-Definition Liposuction

Silhouetch℠ high-definition liposuction is our signature technique that can further enhance lower body lift results. This procedure creates sculpted contours by selectively removing fat and enhancing natural muscle definition. Unlike traditional liposuction, it employs precise methods to accentuate the abdomen, arms, and thighs, giving patients a toned and athletic look. Silhouetch℠ is an appealing solution for people seeking a more defined and chiseled physique that aligns with their body goals.

Recovery After Lower Body Lift

Swelling and bruising continue to decrease. The discomfort subsides to more manageable levels, and pain medication can typically be reduced or eliminated. Patients return to light activity, like short walks outside the home. Normal daily movement gets progressively easier. However, vigorous activity is restricted to avoid straining the incisions. Patients usually return to desk work after 10-14 days of recovery.
In the fifth and sixth weeks after surgery, swelling subsides significantly, and patients feel much better. Discomfort is typically minimal as long as activity restrictions are followed. Patients can gradually resume strenuous exercise and lifting. By 6 weeks, most individuals are ready to return to the gym while continuing to protect the healing incisions. Final results take 3-6 months as the remaining swelling goes down. The length of recovery depends on whether the patient undergoes a partial or complete lower body lift.
Patients return home the same day after the lower body lift. They are advised to have someone drive them back from the surgical facility. There is usually soreness, swelling, and pain at the treated sites. Our board-certified plastic surgeon prescribes appropriate medication to manage these symptoms. Patients are instructed to walk around their homes every couple of hours after the surgery to prevent blood clots. They should rest with their legs elevated as much as possible.
During the first week after a lower body lift, patients experience a peak in swelling and bruising. Pain medication and muscle relaxants can alleviate these sensations. Patients must have assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing, and cooking. Walking is encouraged to improve circulation and prevent blood clots. Compression garments also help minimize swelling. After 7 days, the surgeon removes the stitches at our office. Patients should avoid lifting, bending, straining, or strenuous activity during the first week.
