What Is Breast Revision?

Breast revision is a cosmetic procedure that improves the results of a previous breast surgery. The main goal of this corrective operation is to help women achieve more desirable breast shape, size, symmetry, or nipple position. Breast revision typically takes 2–4 hours and is customized to address the patient’s specific concerns after an initial surgery. Depending on the reason for corrections, different techniques may be used to rearrange existing breast tissue, adjust implant size or location, graft fat, or improve the appearance of scars.

Removal of Breast Implants
Women may choose to have their breast implants taken out for personal or medical reasons. The procedure involves making an incision and gently removing the implant capsule along with the implant. The loose skin is then cut away to create a beautiful shape. In the end, patients achieve smaller breasts that look perky and youthful.
This procedure involves replacing old breast implants with new ones. Reasons for doing this may include implant rupture, capsular contracture, shifting of implants, or a desire to change size or shape. The old implants are removed and replaced with ones selected by the patient.
Breast pocket revision corrects problems with implant pockets. For example, they may need to be repaired if torn, recentered if implants have shifted out of place, or made larger or smaller. Incision sites are reopened to access and revise the pockets as necessary.
During this procedure, the surgeon uses liposuction to remove fat from certain areas of the woman’s body. The harvested tissue is then carefully injected into the breasts for subtle enhancement and improved proportions. This surgery avoids artificial implants and allows for increasing breast size by no more than 1 cup. Patients enjoy a softer, more natural feel and appearance as the transferred fat integrates with the breast tissue.

Breast lift revision corrects various issues from previous surgery, such as recurrent sagging or uneven shape/size. The original incisions are reopened, and the breasts are lifted into a desirable, youthful position. Additional techniques, like internal sutures, may be used for optimal results. Our surgeons have the necessary expertise and advanced technology to deliver dramatic improvements after a botched breast lift.

Scar revision surgery aims to correct unsatisfactory scarring that may have resulted from breast augmentation or lift. Scars can be revised if they are unusually thick, raised, discolored, uneven, or extend beyond the desired locations. Common techniques include scar excision, dermabrasion, laser resurfacing, steroid injections, or microneedling. The primary goal is to create thinner, lighter, and less noticeable scars that blend naturally with the breast skin.

Consultation & Preparation for Breast Revision

Preparation for breast revision typically begins with an initial consultation to discuss the patient’s goals and options. Our surgeon evaluates the person’s health history, examines the breasts, and recommends the most appropriate revision technique based on factors like breast shape, skin quality, and placement of current implants.
Preparation usually includes the following:
Clear pre-operative communication between the patient and surgical team lays the groundwork for a successful operation and subsequent recovery.

Markings

The doctor marks the skin with a surgical pen, mapping out the existing scars, new incision sites, and areas for reshaping, lifting, or reducing. These markings ensure precision and effectiveness throughout the procedure.

The patient is put under general anesthesia to keep them comfortable and block all pain signals. Our anesthesiologist provides intravenous medication to induce a temporary state of unconsciousness and maintains this state throughout the plastic surgery.

Following the markings, the doctor makes incisions in the existing scar lines and/or creates new openings to access the breast tissue as needed. Incision placement and length depend on the specific revision technique being used.
The surgeon reshapes the breast tissue to improve contours and symmetry. This may involve lifting, reducing, or augmenting different sections of the breasts utilizing various techniques, such as mastopexy, fat transfer, implant removal/exchange, and scar revision.
Once the breast is restructured, the incisions are carefully closed. Dissolvable sutures are typically placed in layers beneath the skin to ensure optimal sealing and healing. Surgical drains are not used in our breast revision cases.

Recovery After Breast Revision

The First 24 Hours

Immediately after surgery, there will be some pain, bruising, and swelling in the breast area. It is important to take pain medication as needed and allow for adequate rest. Patients should keep the surgical dressing clean and dry. They must also avoid lifting their arms above their head.
During the first few days after surgery, patients should continue taking pain medication and using ice packs to reduce swelling. Some drainage or bleeding from the incisions is normal. It is crucial to avoid any strenuous activities or lifting anything heavy. Patients must wear a supportive bra for comfort. Stitches are usually removed after a week of recovery.
Swelling and bruising should begin to subside during this period. Discomfort levels also decrease. Patients must continue wearing a supportive bra and avoid unnecessary arm movements. Light activities are acceptable, but no upper-body exercises are allowed yet.
By the third week, bruising and other symptoms decrease significantly. Arms should be able to move freely without discomfort. The incisions are typically well-healed by this time. Gentle stretching or low-impact exercise may be started with the doctor’s approval. Patients must take precautions as directed by our surgeon to avoid damaging the incision sites.
Healing should be mostly complete after a month of recovery. Patients must attend all follow-up appointments to monitor progress. Scars may remain tender for several months but continue to improve over time. It can take up to 1 year for patients to see the final results of their breast revision surgery.

Characteristics of Candidates for Breast Revision Banner

Characteristics of Candidates for Breast Revision

As one of the most popular procedures in Michigan, breast augmentation has helped many women improve their appearance. However, primary breast augmentation surgery sometimes leads to undesirable outcomes due to operational risks, lifestyle factors, changes in personal preferences, and inadequate skills of the performing doctor. Patients may develop asymmetrical breasts, capsular contracture, implant malposition, or the desire to change breast implant size. In these cases, a revision surgery can be performed to correct the issues caused by the original operation. After a breast augmentation consultation, our doctors offer many options to improve the patient’s appearance.
A breast lift can raise and reshape sagging breasts. However, aging, gravity, and other factors may cause breasts to lose their firmness or become asymmetric again. Revision surgery is often performed in these cases to address the recurrent sagging and other problems.
Breast surgery always results in some degree of scarring. Many patients feel disappointed when these lines become thick, raised, or a different color than the surrounding skin. Luckily, our board-certified plastic surgeon can improve the appearance of unsightly scars from a previous breast surgery.
The patient must be in good overall health to be eligible for breast revision. Certain pre-existing conditions, like diabetes or autoimmune disorders, may increase surgical risks. We recommend reaching a healthy weight and avoiding smoking for a month before the procedure.
The patient should have realistic goals and expectations for the outcome of their breast revision. While improvements can often be achieved, the procedure has some limitations. Candidates should describe their expectations and understand that additional surgeries may not always be possible.

Benefits of Breast Revision

Improved Breast Appearance
Revision surgery allows women to improve the shape, size, and contour of their breasts. Our doctors can correct many issues, such as asymmetry, deformities, implant malposition, and other problems caused by a previous breast augmentation procedure. We use the best techniques to achieve natural-looking outcomes.
Restored Confidence and Self-Esteem
Living with the unsatisfactory results of breast augmentation can take a toll on a person’s confidence. Our revision procedures can renew self-esteem. Women often report feeling more comfortable in their bodies and confident about their appearance after corrections.
Reduced Pain
In some cases, a botched surgery, capsular contracture, or improperly placed implants may cause chronic pain and discomfort. Breast revision provides an opportunity to correct these problems and feel better. Replacing ill-fitting implants or releasing contracted scar tissue can eliminate pain associated with implants.
Improved Ability to Breastfeed
Another crucial benefit of breast revision is the restored ability to breastfeed. Women may lose this capability after undergoing breast augmentation or reduction. Our surgical procedure can help patients regain sensation and milk duct function, making breastfeeding possible again.

Cost of Breast Revision in Novi, Michigan

The cost of breast revision surgery in Novi, MI, varies from $3,000 to $18,000. This price range covers the surgeon’s fees, anesthesia, and operating room use. Overall, the cost depends on the complexity of the revision procedure. Simple adjustments or replacements of breast implants tend to be on the lower end, while more complicated revisions requiring tissue grafting or flap techniques are more expensive.

When budgeting for breast revision surgery, patients should consider additional costs beyond the procedure. Post-operative medications, lab tests, compression garments, and medical clearance exams may add a few hundred dollars. It is also essential to factor in time away from work needed for recovery.

We will explain all fees during the initial consultation. We can also discuss payment plans and flexible financing to make breast revision more affordable.
