What Is Facial Feminization Surgery?

Facial feminization surgery (FFS) is a cosmetic surgery that alters male facial features to become more feminine. This treatment is customized for each patient and may involve hairline correction, brow lift, rhinoplasty, cheek and chin contouring, neck surgery, and other procedures. The goal of FFS is to help transgender women’s and non-binary people’s faces appear more feminine and gender-affirming.

Consultation & Preparation

Transgender patients often work with a diverse team of healthcare specialists when transitioning, including mental health counselors, surgeons, and transgender health providers. This multidisciplinary approach makes it possible to provide comprehensive, safe, and customized care. Before undergoing transgender surgery, candidates must start hormone therapy to support the feminizing of their facial anatomy. Following the recommended sequence of transition-related care, along with guidance from expert professionals, can help candidates achieve optimal treatment outcomes and prepare for invasive procedures.

After beginning hormone therapy, the patient should meet with the surgeon to discuss their goals and create a detailed treatment plan. During this session, Dr. Lakin carefully evaluates facial features and selects the appropriate procedures for feminizing the face.

Patients must undergo a full medical evaluation to make sure that their health is sufficient for FFS. We assess heart, lung, and other organ functioning. Our specialists also review medical history and any medications or supplements to make the procedure as safe as possible.

Facial Feminization Surgery Procedure

FFS includes a variety of plastic surgery techniques to alter typically male facial features into a softer, more feminine aesthetic. By reshaping tissues and adjusting facial contours, FFS helps transgender women and non-binary individuals transition both physically and emotionally. Dr. Lakin tailors each procedure to the individual needs of every patient.

ANESTHESIA

The operation is performed under general anesthesia. A trained professional administers medication through an IV and monitors the patient throughout surgery.

Feminization Techniques

The surgeon sculpts the bone and cartilage of the nose to alter its shape. This may include reducing the size, narrowing the width, changing the angle, or refining the tip. The goal is to create facial harmony and a more delicate and feminine nasal profile.

Through a small incision on the inside of the mouth, we can remove excess fat from the cheeks to give a more sculpted feminine appearance of the jawline and cheekbones.

Fat is collected from the abdomen, thighs, or other areas through liposuction. This tissue is processed and injected in small amounts into different areas of the face to add volume. As a result, the patient exhibits more feminine contours and a youthful, rejuvenated appearance.
An incision is made under the nose to shorten the distance to the upper lip. This exposes more of the pink lip area, creating a more feminine appearance.
Recovery After Facial Feminization Surgery Banner

Recovery After Facial Feminization Surgery

The initial rehabilitation from FFS typically takes several weeks. Swelling, bruising, and moderate pain are common during the first 7 days. Patients may also experience breathing issues after rhinoplasty and are advised to rest and sleep with their heads elevated on pillows.
Numbness and tightness in the face are expected during recovery. Thus, patients may be asked to perform simple head exercises to prevent tightness. Full healing can take up to a year. Following our board-certified plastic surgeon’s instructions is important for proper rehabilitation after facial feminization procedures.

Benefits of Facial Feminization Surgery

Improved Gender Identity Alignment

Facial feminization surgery helps to align facial appearance with gender identity. By softening masculine features and creating a more feminine look, FFS may significantly reduce gender dysphoria and improve overall mental well-being. This alignment increases self-confidence and provides a greater sense of comfort in many different situations.

FFS procedures aim to create a more harmonious and balanced facial appearance. Surgeons can design a softer, more feminine look by changing the forehead, brow, nose, cheeks, jaw, and chin. Facial harmony may greatly improve the patient’s overall appearance and attractiveness.
A new face can open social and professional opportunities. Many transgender women and gender non-conforming individuals report feeling more comfortable in their interactions with others after undergoing FFS. This increased confidence improves relationships, job prospects, and overall quality of life.
Gender dysphoria can have a significant impact on mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, and other emotional challenges. By addressing the physical aspects of this condition through FFS, many individuals experience a significant improvement in their psychological well-being. Thus, FFS may lead to greater self-acceptance, reduced stress levels, and a more positive outlook.
