What is Transgender Surgery?

Often referred to as gender-affirming surgery, transgender surgery encompasses a range of procedures designed to match a person’s gender identity with their physical appearance. These procedures are important for many transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, providing them with the means to live more comfortably in their skin and society.
There are two main categories of transgender surgery, based
on the transition direction:

Male-to-female (MTF) Surgeries

Female-to-male (FTM) Surgeries

A vital preparatory step for many undergoing transgender surgery in Michigan is hormone therapy, aligned with the informed consent model. This involves administering hormones like estrogen to MTF individuals to bring forth feminine features and testosterone to FTM individuals to develop masculine traits. A significant phase in this treatment involves intermediate dose hormones, which ensure the physical changes are substantial yet manageable. This careful administration prepares individuals for future surgical interventions both mentally and physically. It marks an essential milestone in their transition journey, facilitating a smoother transformation that resonates deeply with their sense of self.

Ideal Candidates for Transgender Surgery

At Illuum Cosmetic Surgery, we adopted the multidisciplinary approach, where various healthcare professionals collaborate closely to tailor gender-affirming care to the individual needs of our transgender patients. Several key factors influence their suitability for these procedures:
Stable Mental Health
You may experience mental health challenges such as anxiety or depression; however, with these conditions effectively managed under the care of a mental health provider, your mental health stability becomes a cornerstone of your readiness. It’s essential to ensure you have the resilience to navigate the aftercare of the surgery process and cope with its significant changes and challenges.
Age and Legal Considerations
Candidates are typically legal adults who can provide informed consent for surgery. In some cases, minors may undergo certain surgeries with parental consent and a comprehensive evaluation.
Physical Health
Good general health is important to minimize surgical risks and promote a smoother recovery. Any chronic conditions, like diabetes or high blood pressure, should be well-controlled.
Hormone Therapy as Part of Transition
Patients aiming to feminize their breasts, buttocks, or facial anatomy as part of their transition may benefit from undergoing gender-affirming hormone therapy prior to these plastic surgery procedures. It is vital to prepare the body by enhancing feminine features, which can improve the outcomes of surgical interventions aimed at feminizing physical appearance.
Multidisciplinary Evaluation
Ideally, candidates have been evaluated by a team of healthcare providers, including mental health services professionals or counselors, transgender healthcare providers, and our board-certified plastic surgeons specializing in transgender care. This multidisciplinary approach to transgender surgery ensures that the individual’s overall health and well-being are considered.
