What Is a Female-to-Male
Top Surgery?

FTM top surgery is a procedure that masculinizes the chest
of a female-bodied person. The goal of this treatment is to create
a male-typical chest shape. It involves removing breast tissue
and reshaping that area. FTM top surgery takes approximately
2 to 4 hours to complete. Dr. Lakin performs this procedure using
the latest and safest technology and techniques.

FTM Top Surgery Before & After

Consultation & Preparation
for FTM Top Surgery

Transgender procedures are usually done in concert with a multidisciplinary team, including a counselor, plastic surgeon, and transgender healthcare provider. Patients should be transitioning on hormones to help masculinize the chest prior to undergoing the surgery.

Several important steps are involved in preparing for this operation. First,
the patient consults with the surgeon to discuss their goals, medical history, and the specifics of the procedure. The doctor evaluates their health
and anatomy to determine if they are a good candidate for treatment. Additionally, the patient undergoes lab testing and medical clearances
to ensure safety during surgery.
In the weeks before the operation, the patient is instructed to stop smoking and avoid certain medications and supplements that can increase bleeding risks. Arrangements are also made for the recovery period, including time off work, assistance at home, comfortable resting conditions, and easy-to-prepare meals. Understanding what to expect before, during, and after the operation helps the candidate get ready mentally and physically.

Types of FTM Top Surgery Incisions

Keyhole

This technique involves a semi-circular incision under the areola. Its main advantages are less visible scarring and the retention of nipple sensation. However, it generally only
works for those needing a smaller amount of chest tissue removed. This approach is best suited for FTM patients with smaller chests seeking masculinization with minimal scarring.

Periareolar or Donut

In this method, a circular incision is made around the outer edge of the areola. It leaves less scarring and a better nipple sensation. Nevertheless, this incision can be slightly
more visible than the keyhole one. The periareolar technique works well for those needing a moderate amount of chest tissue removed.

Double Incision

Two horizontal incisions are made across the chest, typically along the lower border of the pectoral muscles. These openings allow for the extensive removal of tissue and skin.

The nipple-areolar complex is usually resized and repositioned as part of the procedure. Double incision is often preferred for individuals with larger amounts of chest tissue. However, the scarring is more visible, and there is a higher risk of sensation loss.

FTM Top Surgery Procedure

Anesthesia

The patient is put under general anesthesia so they remain asleep without pain or discomfort during the procedure. We use the best practices to ensure that the entire process is totally effective and safe.

Strategic openings are made to remove tissue and sculpt a masculine chest shape. The location and length of incisions can vary based on the patient’s body type and needs.
Excess skin and tissue is taken out to create a flatter, more contoured masculine chest. The quantity removed depends on the patient’s goals and the surgeon’s real-time assessment.
If needed, the nipples are carefully shifted to a more natural spot on the chest. The surgeon chooses the position that will create the most masculine and realistic appearance. Oversized nipples may also be reduced to the proper proportions. This involves decreasing the areola size and reshaping the nipple.
Once the desired shape is achieved, the incisions are carefully closed using sutures and medical glue to minimize scarring. The team ensures proper alignment and tension of the incision edges to optimize healing.

Recovery After Female-to-Male Top Surgery

Recovery from FTM top surgery involves several weeks of rest and limited activity. Immediately after the operation, patients may experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising, which can be managed with pain medication and ice packs. The first week requires avoiding strenuous activities and wearing a compression garment. Gradually, swelling subsides, and patients can resume light tasks, following our instructions closely for optimal results. Full recovery may take weeks or months. Therefore, it is crucial to be patient and adhere to post-operative care.

Candidates for FTM Top Surgery

In general, FTM top surgery is sought by individuals who were assigned female at birth and desire a more masculine chest appearance. Potential candidates for this operation include:
